alcoa corporate center, pittsburgh pa 1994 - 1998

The glass serpentine appears to "float" above its own shadow behind the vertically undulating (concrete) walls. These straight walls are layered from river-to-road parallel to the river forming the waterfront terraces descending to the water-edge. (August 1997)

View of the parallel walls of the linear waterfront terraces. The walls geometrically connect the existing piers of the two bridges. These concrete walls are lined with rusticated sandstone veneer quarried from the same quarry as the piers.
Seating and circulation areas are intertwined as terraces as they descend to the water. The arrangement and types of trees are "geometric" and precise, to extend the abstraction of the building to the water. (November 1997)

Under construction across the river, parallel to the ALCOA waterfront terraces, is the Allegheny Riverfront Park, a two-level linear promenade by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. (November 1997)

Linear developments, flood lines, and "waves imprints" (natural and man-made) along the river-edge. (November 1997)
